What is a Fumo? An Introduction to the Fluffiest Plushies

If you have spent any time scrolling through Touhou Project fan art, or browsing the shelves of a Japanese hobby store, you have probably come across a small, round, slightly squished plush with a distinctive stitched face staring back at you. That is a Fumo, and once you understand where they came from, it is easy to see why so many people end up collecting more than one.

Where the name comes from

The word "Fumo" comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia mofu mofu, a term used to describe something soft and fluffy. Say it out loud a couple of times and it starts to make sense, since that is exactly the feeling these plushies are going for. Anyone who has picked one up will tell you the name fits.

From doujinshi pages to your bookshelf

The design itself traces back to the artist Nejikirio, whose chibi-style character art first appeared in a doujinshi called Together with Inu Sakuya, released at the end of 2006. The rounded proportions and the now-iconic eye shape came from that early work, although nobody was calling them "Fumo" just yet.

That changed in August 2008, when the company Gift released the very first official FumoFumo plushies: Reimu and Marisa, two of the most recognizable characters from the Touhou Project series. They sold out quickly, which set the tone for pretty much every release since. Gift kept re-releasing those two while gradually adding more characters to the lineup, and the line has been growing steadily for well over a decade.

From niche merchandise to full-blown internet phenomenon

For the first few years, Fumos stayed mostly within Touhou fan circles. That started to shift in late 2018, when a wave of memes featuring the plushies spread across social media and introduced them to a much wider audience. Suddenly people who had never heard of Touhou Project were asking where to buy one, and the secondhand market that collectors rely on today really started to take shape around this time.

What actually makes a Fumo a Fumo

A few things set Fumos apart from your average plush toy:

• The face. Large, simplified eyes and a minimal expression, all based on Nejikirio's original art style.
• The proportions. Most Fumos sit rather than stand, with short limbs and a rounded, huggable body.
• The tag or badge. Every official release ships with either a fabric tag or a small tin badge, which collectors use to tell genuine Fumos apart from bootlegs.
• The size range. Standard Fumos are around 20 centimeters tall, but the line also includes larger Mannaka and Deka versions, plus smaller variants for characters with especially long ears or added accessories.

More than just a toy

What keeps people coming back is less about any single plush and more about the whole culture around them. There are community projects dedicated to sizing charts, buying guides, and even custom-sewing patterns for fans who want to make their own. For a toy line that started as a small doujin project, that is a pretty remarkable following.

If you are new to the hobby, the best place to start is usually with a standard-size Fumo of a character you already like. From there, it is only a matter of time before you start eyeing the rest of the lineup.
