A trend that has gained significant popularity within the Japanese Touhou fandom in recent years is the creation of doujinshi whose protagonists are the fumos themselves.
Some notable authors include Kamepasuta, creator of the Saikyou Cirno to FumoFumo Pasta trilogy, as well as fumokamui, U_Kazuya, EL CASTILLO, and others.
Many of these doujinshi, in addition to serving as collections of photographs featuring fumos in tourist locations or telling original stories, share one common characteristic: the vast majority were published from 2019 onward, after fumos experienced a major surge in international popularity.
Before this "boom," it was quite rare to find doujinshi centered around fumos, although that does not mean they did not exist.
Some of Nejikirio's works featured small fumo cameos. In Koko wa Douguya Kourindou desu, published on August 14, 2010, the fumos of Reimu Hakurei and Inu Sakuya can be seen in the background of the cover illustration. However, beyond the fact that Nejikirio was the original designer of the fumos, there was also an unrelated circle that produced a doujinshi focused entirely on them.
Fumo Fumo Reimu ni Fumo Fumo Suru Hon, which can be roughly translated as "The Book That Fluffs Fumo Reimu," is a twelve-page doujinshi created by the circle Lab*. Its exact publication date is unknown, although it is believed to have been released sometime between 2008 and 2009.
Unfortunately, the doujinshi is currently lost, and its contents remain completely unknown. However, both its cover and title suggest that the work was centered on Reimu Hakurei alongside her Deka Fumo counterpart.
The existence of this doujinshi suggests that there was already interest in creating stories featuring fumos during the early years of the franchise. It may also be considered one of the earliest known works to treat fumos as the primary focus of a story.
Furthermore, it raises the possibility that other fumo-centered doujinshi once existed but were either lost over time or simply went unnoticed by the wider community.
